MIDTOWN — Heavy rain and thick fog are expected to make one of the busiest travel days of the year even more chaotic Wednesday.

As of 10:45 a.m., 21 flights had been cancelled at LaGuardia Airport while another 35 inbound and outbound flights were delayed.

The situation wasn't much better at JFK Airport, where 10 flights had been cancelled and another 42 had arrival or departure delays, according to Flightaware.com.

The airport chaos was the result of a storm system moving into the city from the south, Port Authority officials and the National Weather Service said.

Up to 1.25 inches of rain was expected throughout the day, with wind gusts around 20 mph and a possible thunderstorm at night, the NWS said.

The wet weather was expected to linger into Christmas morning, dumping another three-quarters of an inch before the skies finally clear around 7 a.m., a service spokesman said.

Gusts of up to 37 mph were also expected Christmas day, the spokesman added.

The clouds should give way to clearer skies around mid-morning as temperatures reach about 55 degrees for the day.
