KIPS BAY — A traveler who was isolated at Bellevue Hospital Tuesday after recently returning from West Africa has tested negative for Ebola, city health officials said.

"An alternative diagnosis has been confirmed and the individual remains at Bellevue in critical condition," according to a joint statement from the Department of Health and Health and Hospitals Corporation.

The unidentified individual did not have contact with Ebola patients while abroad, and was asymptomatic upon return to the U.S. from a nation “facing the Ebola epidemic,” a previous statement from the organizations had said.

Bellevue engaged in special preparations for treating Ebola over the summer and cared for Ebola patient Dr. Craig Spencer in October.
