CHELSEA — Every month, Chelsea Market's main drag will echo with the sounds of indie Brooklyn.
Local musicians will host free concerts inside the market as part of "Chelsea Nights" on the first Friday of every month from 6:30 to 9 p.m., to draw customers to the market at night. The first two shows took place in November and December.
Late-night Chelsea Market joints like The Tippler, Corkbuzz, and Cull & Pistol will be open for food and drinks during the shows.
The next event on Jan. 2 will feature free performances from musical acts Howard, Color Collage and Ben Thornewill, usually seen at clubs like Rockwood Music Hall or Mercury Lounge. Thornewill, the headliner, is a member of the energetic indie-pop band Jukebox the Ghost. Howard is a one-man acoustic show, and Color Collage plays a mixture of guitar and doo-wop beats.
Paper Garden Records, a Brooklyn record label, organizes the show and features its artists.
"It's really something special because you can hear it down the hallway, you can walk in from the west side and see it from the back, it tends to capture everyone's attention for a few minutes to enjoy something they weren't necessarily expecting," said Paper Garden's Bryan Vaughan, 30, who founded the record label in his college dorm room in Nashville.
"There's a lot of music fans out there that may not realize that they’re fans of a particular type of music, but when they see these artists live, it converts them to a fan."
