BROOKLYN HEIGHTS — The Moxie Spot, a restaurant that’s also billed as a play space for children, will close its doors on Dec. 14, its owners announced.

The eatery at 81 Atlantic Ave. near Hicks Street has been a part of Brooklyn Heights for almost seven years.

The Moxie Spot specially catered to children with a kids’ combo menu, a collection of toys and games and an array of activities for families, including sing-alongs, storytelling sessions and Nintendo Wii nights — while also serving breakfast, lunch and dinner as a full restaurant.

But Nat Rubin, the restaurant’s owner, said the space had never been a runaway financial success and he can’t afford to stay open.

“There’s no longer enough money to keep it afloat,” he said.

Rubin, who owns the Atlantic Avenue building, initially opened the Moxie Spot as a place where families could have a full meal and also entertain young children.

“It has been very special for us to cook and serve food, dance, sing, read and play with you,” according to a notice posted online and outside the restaurant, first reported by Brooklyn Heights Blog.

Rubin, who has lived in the neighborhood for 15 years, said he’s in talks with other tenants but it is not immediately clear who will take over the space.

He is also planning a party for the Moxie Spot’s last day on Dec. 14.

“I’m just happy that people had a good time here,” he said. “I’m sorry it had to end.”
