BROOKLYN — A man died Wednesday when a large fire swept through a Flatbush Avenue apartment building and injured 16 other people as well, including two who were in critical condition, police said.

The 24-year-old man, whose name was not immediately released, was inside when flames erupted on the second floor of 1434 Flatbush Ave., near Farragut Road, about 12:40 a.m. and quickly spread to the floor above, NYPD and FDNY officials said.

The 24-year-old suffered smoke inhalation and was pronounced dead at New York Community Hospital, an NYPD spokeswoman said.

Two other people were critically injured, and 14 were in stable condition, officials said. All were treated at area hospitals.

The fire was not deemed suspicious, but fire marshals were trying to figure out what sparked the blaze.
