HUDSON HEIGHTS — La Pinata Mexican Grill has found a new home after suddenly closing its Inwood storefront this summer.

La Pinata will reopen at 711 W. 181st St. near Bennett Avenue. The restaurant, which is under new ownership, will offer an expanded menu with more vegetarian options and also plans to serve alcohol.

“It’s still Mexican, but we’re going to try to do things a little bit differently,” said Tatiana Martinez, the new owner.

The original location of La Pinata at the corner of Broadway and 207th Street closed on July 29 after a little more than a year in business. It was not clear why the restaurant closed.

La Pinata was popular for its Tex-Mex dishes such as fajitas and burritos, as well as for more traditional Mexican dishes including salmon Veracruz and pork al pastor, with most items coming in under $15. The original location did not serve alcohol.

Martinez appeared before Community Board 12's licensing committee to seek approval for a liquor license last week.

The board voted unanimously in favor of the license, which must still be approved by the full board and the State Liquor Authority.

The new La Pinata space, former home of Jimmy's Oro Chinese and Latin Restaurant, is still under construction but is expected to open in February 2015, Martinez said.
