QUEENS — The 19-year-old burglary suspect who was shot by a pair of police officers in Jamaica Monday after he hit one of them in the head with a metal object had a lengthy arrest record, authorities said.

Leighton Friday, of Springfield Gardens, attacked the officer after the lawman and another officer responded to a burglary report just after 1 p.m. at a house on 142nd Street near 109th Avenue, police said.

Authorities said that the suspect had 13 prior arrests, dating back to 2008, including petit larceny, robbery, criminal trespass, assault and criminal possession of stolen property, police said.

The details or results of those cases were not immediately clear.

In March, Friday was also arrested for criminal possession of a weapon, according to court records. That case was ongoing and the details were not clear.

When officers confronted Friday, he attacked one of the officers with either a crowbar or a hammer, police said. Police found both weapons on the scene and were not immediately able to determine which one was used.

The two officers fired at the suspect, striking him twice, once in the left wrist and once in the left thigh, police said.

Friday, who was charged with burglary, assault on a police officer, resisting arrest and criminal mischief, underwent surgery at Jamaica Hospital Monday afternoon and was listed in stable condition, police said Tuesday morning.

The officer, who was also rushed to Jamaica Hospital with cuts to his head, was released that same afternoon, police said.

As of Tuesday morning, the suspect had not yet been arraigned for the burglary, according to the Queens District Attorney’s office. He remained at Jamaica Hospital.
