Thief Caught Wearing Stolen Crucifix at Ferry Terminal, Prosecutors Say

PORT RICHMOND — A man seen wearing a stolen crucifix at the Staten Island ferry terminal was arrested and accused of a home invasion robbery, prosecutors said.

Roberto Kelly, 20, was arrested on Monday at the St. George ferry terminal after police noticed him wearing the crucifix on a gold chain that had been stolen during a home invasion the day before, court papers read.

On Sunday at about 11:20 p.m., Kelly and another suspect broke into the North Burger Avenue home of a 20-year-old man, prosecutors said. When inside, the suspect drew a gun, pointed it at the victim's head and said "Give me everything," according to court papers.

Kelly and the suspect then made off with the victim's gold teeth, a Honda mini motorcycle, a gold wedding band, the crucifix, Balmain jeans, Jordan Olympia sneakers and about $400 in cash, court papers read.

At his Monday arraignment, Kelly was charged with burglary, robbery, grand larceny, criminal possession of stolen property and petit larceny, according to court papers.

His bail was set at $45,000 bond, $15,000 cash, and he's due back in court on Friday.

The other suspect has not been arrested yet.

Other recent crimes in Staten Island include:

► A man threatened to shoot his 19-year-old stepson and was later found with a stockpile of weapons in his bedroom, prosecutors said.

David Dozier, 44, called his stepson on the phone and told him, "I will shoot you" on Halloween at about 3 p.m., court papers read.

Dozier was stopped in his car 27 minutes later by police at the intersection of Grandview Avenue and Roxbury Street, where they found a gravity knife in the side panel of the car, according to court papers.

Police then raided Dozier's Grandview Avenue home and found a loaded .38 mm revolver and .9 mm handgun inside a lockbox in his bedroom, a loaded .22 caliber rifle inside a case and an imitation air pistol in the top drawer of his dresser, court papers read.

Dozier was charged with criminal possession of a firearm and aggravated harassment at his Saturday arraignment.

His bond was set at $50,000 and he's due back in court on Nov. 14.

► A woman driving without a license ran into a 78-year-old man inside a Staten Island parking lot, breaking both of his legs, prosecutors said.

Portelle Victoria, 31, ran into the man inside the shopping center parking lot at Clove Road and Genesee Street on Monday shortly after 11:30 a.m., court papers read.

Victoria drove away from the scene but was stopped by police inside a green Toyota Corolla in front of 30 Arlo St. minutes later, court papers read.

She told police that "I heard something against the side of the car, so I looked on the right side and saw what appeared to be black, plastic or vinyl, like a garbage bag," according to court papers.

When police checked her license, they saw she had six suspensions on it.

Victoria was charged with leaving the scene of an accident and aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle at her arraignment on Monday, prosecutors said.

► An off-duty EMT driver for Staten Island University Hospital was arrested for driving while intoxicated after he sideswiped a car and left the scene, prosecutors said.

Fausto Peralta, 29, was driving his 2006 Toyota early Saturday morning when he sideswiped a Nissan Altima on the corner of Farragut Avenue and Goethals Road North, prosecutors said.

Peralta kept driving after the crash and police found him leaning on the side of his car at the corner of Richmond Avenue and Jewels Drive with the engine still running, court papers read.

"It just happened so quick," Peralta told police, according to court papers. "I freaked out when we hit and I drove away."

Peralta was given a breathalyzer test and had a .243 blood alcohol content, court papers read. 

He was charged with a DWI and leaving the scene of an accident at his Saturday arraignment, prosecutors said.

Peralta was released without bail and is due back in court on Jan. 14, according to court records.

► An 18-year-old man was arrested for a DWI after he crashed his car, prosecutors said.

Justin Dinolfo, 18, crashed his 2004 Toyota Suburban into another car near 11 Hillcrest Ave. shortly before 1 a.m. on Tuesday, court papers read.

When police found him at the scene of the crash he told them, "I was driving. I had about six beers." He  had a blood alcohol content of .141, court papers read.

Dinolfo was charged with driving while intoxicated at his Tuesday arraignment, prosecutors said.
