PARK SLOPE — Police are searching for the driver of a Hyundai Elantra that hit a woman in Park Slope on Wednesday afternoon then sped away from the scene, the NYPD said.
The 46-year-old woman was hospitalized in critical condition after the incident, which happened as the woman was crossing the street at Fourth Avenue and Union Street at 12:38 p.m., authorities said.
The car was a Hyundai Elantra with the license plate number GRM8448, the NYPD said. The vehicle fled northbound on Fourth Avenue, police said.
Police are investigating reports that the Hyundai may have been stolen, an NYPD spokesman said.
Two witnesses said the Hyundai ran a red light on Fourth Avenue before hitting the woman.
"She landed on its windshield, flew up in the air and landed on the floor. The car just left," said Fraydie Liberow, who saw the accident with her husband Levi.
Levi Liberow said the woman landed head first on the pavement. The couple, who both work as EMTs, rushed to help the woman.
"Her face was covered with blood," Fraydie Liberow said. "She was unconscious."
The pedestrian, whose name was not immediately available, suffered a head wound and was taken by ambulance to Lutheran Medical Center at 12:39 p.m., a spokesman for the FDNY said.
Police at the scene said the victim's injuries did not appear to be life threatening.
