QUEENS — Police fatally shot a knife-wielding man on a Flushing street after he threatened staff at New York Hospital Queens Sunday morning, NYPD officials said.

The 29-year-old man, whose name was not immediately released, fled the hospital at 56-45 Main St., near Booth Memorial Avenue, after lunging at staff with a box cutter about 7:40 a.m., police said.

A sergeant and a uniformed officer responded to a 911 call and found the suspect in front of 43-34 Kissena Blvd., near Ash Avenue, about 40 minutes later, NYPD officials said.

The sergeant and the officer, along with two others who responded to the scene, started walking towards the suspect, but he lunged at them with the knife so they drew their weapons and fired, hitting him once in the torso, according to the NYPD.

The suspect was taken back to the hospital and pronounced dead, police said.

The four police officers were taken to the hospital and treated for tinnitus, officials said. Neither the police nor the hospital staff were injured by the man's knife, a police spokeswoman said.

Police said their investigation into the shooting was ongoing.
