GREENWICH VILLAGE — A man in an American flag jacket crawled out of a sidewalk subway hatch then smoke-bombed a Greenwich Village restaurant Friday, police said.

Surveillance video from restaurant Da Silvano shows the man emerge from a subway grate on the sidewalk outside neighboring Bar Pitti, at 268 Sixth Ave. about 4:50 p.m. on Oct. 10.

The man can be seen propping the hatch up and placing a canister emitting red smoke on the sidewalk just outside the hatch.

Then he climbs out, hurls the smoke bomb at Bar Pitti, before quickly ducking back down through the grate.

Employees of both restaurants declined to comment.

Police said there were no injuries related to the smoke bomb.

They described the suspect as a blond man, about 20 years old, wearing black gloves, a black baseball cap, and a multi-colored shirt.

In the video, the man appears to be wearing a jacket covered in the pattern of the American flag.

Police ask that anyone with information about this incident call their Crime Stoppers hotline at 1-800-577-TIPS (8477). Tips can also be submitted online.
