MIDTOWN EAST — A worker was injured when he fell about 15 feet at a luxury condo's construction site, officials said.

The man, whose name and age were not immediately released, was signaling an overhead crane while standing on a wooden platform at the forthcoming residential tower at 252 E. 57th St., where apartments start at $4.5 million, when he fell through a hole in the planks about 8:20 a.m., officials said.

"The hole was already on the deck. Someone had put a cover on it which was just a little bigger than the hole. As soon as he stepped on it, he fell through the hole," said a fellow worker, a 29-year-old named Luis, who didn't give his last name.

"For now, we don't know why the wood gave way," said Steve Vassi, a spokesman for the Office of Emergency Management.

Crews initially had trouble getting the man out of the basement but were eventually able to take him to New York-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell hospital, where he was listed in stable condition, an FDNY spokesman said.

The owner of the luxury tower did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

The Department of Buildings issued a stop-work order at the construction site, a spokesman said.
