TOMPKINSVILLE — A new weekly art market is being hosted throughout the fall at Tompkinsville Park.

Art in the Park" at Tompkinsville Park is being held every weekend until November.

"The neighborhood is really starting to grow and it's starting to attract a great group of artists," said Leticia Remauro, chair of Community Board 1 which is hosting the event along with the Parks Department and several other groups and businesses.

"We think that this is a great way to highlight all the wonderful things that are going on in the neighborhood. It gives people an opportunity to meet each other and it gives local artists the opportunity to show their wares."

Aside from artists, the event will have musicians preform and local restaurants selling food.

All types of artists and crafters — from photographers to jewelry and rug makers — are expected to attend. The market will be open every Saturday and Sunday until Nov. 2 and, if it's successful, organizers plan to make it a yearly event.

Charles Garone, a Manhattan native who recently moved to St. George, has been helping organize the event and said he hopes it will not only bring locals together, but get people from other boroughs to see the neighborhood.

"I want to do anything i can to help build up the integrity of the neighborhood and to make it something special," he said.

"It has the same energy that Manhattan had in my 20s and I'm going to do anything I can to help expose other people to it."

The group hopes that the event helps bring long time residents together with people who recently moved in and make the park a meeting spot.

"We think that this place is a gathering spot, it always was and we want it to be again," Remauro said.

"Art in the Park" is open 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. every Saturday and Sunday until Nov. 2.
