THE BRONX — A trio of carjackers escaped empty-handed after slamming their stolen SUV into an NYPD squad car and fleeing on foot Friday, police said.

The three carjackers broke into an SUV that had been parked outside 1135 Southern Blvd., near East 167th Street, about 6 p.m., according to the NYPD. A man saw them break into the car and tried to stop them by grabbing onto the SUV door, police said.

The witness, whose identity was not released, was still hanging onto the SUV door when the carjackers sped forward and collided with a squad car that had been responding to an unrelated police call, according to the NYPD.

The carjackers, who are believed to be about 25 years old, then jumped out of the SUV and fled on foot, police said. Police released surveillance footage of the men, one of whom was last seen wearing a white T-shirt and black pants, another wearing a gray hooded sweatshirt, and a third wearing a dark-colored T-shirt and striped athletic shorts.

The extent of the damage to the police car was not immediately available. Police did not say whether officers on the scene gave chase. The identity of the man who intervened in the carjacking was not immediately available, but he was not injured in the incident, police said.

One of the officers in the squad car was treated for minor foot injuries and released, according to the NYPD.

Anyone with information should contact Crime Stoppers at (800) 577-TIPS (8477).
