FORT GREENE — Fort Greene Park's Visitor Center, which has been closed to the public since last spring, is expected to reopen by the end of the year.
The center, which sits in the middle of the park, closed when the former director Carol Anastasio left the position, staff at the park said.
It houses specimens of local insect species, a Revolutionary War–era cannon, musket and bayonet as well as photos of the park's designers Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux, among other artifacts and memorabilia, according to a spokeswoman for the Department of Parks and Recreation.
The center also has bathrooms that primarily serve visitors to the southern portion of the park. The only other restrooms are located near the corner of Myrtle Avenue and St. Edwards Street.
It is unclear why Anastasio left her post but a Parks spokeswoman confirmed that the department is in the process of hiring a new director who will be in charge of management and maintenance and running special events at the park.
"The Visitors Center in Fort Greene has unfortunately been closed in the absence of a dedicated staff member for the park," spokeswoman Meghan Lalor said.
"We are conducting interviews for a Director of Fort Greene Park and hope to reopen the building upon filling that position."
The director should be able to talk about the flora, fauna and history of the park with a certain level of expertise and conduct tours, along with urban parks rangers.
