SOUTH WILLIAMSBURG — A couple who took in a pit bull puppy that was found tied to a light pole in South Williamsburg are now looking to find her a new home.

Kevin Hicks, 33, said he saw the pit bull — whom he and his girlfriend have named Applejack — tied to a light pole at Broadway and Hooper Street on Monday evening around 5:30 p.m.

When he walked by again a couple hours later, the dog was still there — barking and affectionate but clearly upset, he said.

When he went to pet the dog, employees from a local barbershop said that she had been there for a day and a half, Hicks said.

"She was clearly very distressed," he said.

The barbershop employees told Hicks that they had called authorities, and Hicks, thinking that the dog would likely be euthanized, took the animal in.

A vet told Hicks that Applejack had cysts in her ovaries, a yeast infection in her ears and diarrhea, much of it likely caused by stress.

The cysts would be fixed by spaying the dog, Hicks said, adding that she is on antibiotics.

Hicks took to social media to find a new home for Applejack, who is estimated to be about 2 or 3 years old, since he does not have the space or schedule to keep her. He also created a Facebook page for Applejack.

With help from social media, the couple have found a foster home for Applejack but have yet to find a permanent solution. The dog is supposed to go to the foster home Thursday.

Local no-kill shelters told Hicks that they do not have room for the pet.

The dog doesn't seem to get along with other dogs, and tends to try biting other dogs when taken for a walk, Hicks said.
