MORRISANIA — A thief broke into a South Bronx funeral home in the middle of the night earlier this month and snatched a television set from a chapel that was used to display photos and videos from relatives, police said.

The burglar came into the Herbert T. McCall Funeral Home, at 984 Prospect Ave., near 165th Street, through the back door, which was padlocked, around 3:30 a.m. on Sept. 10, grabbed a TV and left through the same door, according to the NYPD.

Video of the incident shows the suspect snooping around several different rooms of the funeral home with a flashlight.

The television was a 40-inch Samsung Smart TV that the funeral home used for videos remembering the deceased, according to Cheryl Newkirk, administrative assistant at the funeral home. She estimated it was worth about $800 and said it was located in the chapel.

The funeral home has since installed a new lock system and is in the process of putting in an alarm, Newkirk said.

"We upgraded everything," she said. "A mouse can't get in here now."

Newkirk expressed disappointment at the idea of someone stealing from a funeral home.

"It’s just a shame. Just pathetic really," she said. "Breaking into a funeral home? Come on. It’s ridiculous."
