TOTTENVILLE — Busy Tottenville streets will get widened roadways and new turn lanes as part of a $5.5 million city-funded project.

Borough President James Oddo and Councilman Vincent Ignizio announced the improvements to Page Avenue and Amboy Road and sections of Richmond Valley Road on Thursday. The project will add dedicated turn lanes and lights, additional lanes and sidewalk modifications to the two streets.

"People are investing in this area and the only thing they ask for is infrastructure," said Oddo, who allotted an additional $4.3 million to the funds initially put forward by his predecessor James Molinaro, to ensure the project would move forward.

"The very least we can do is get out of their way and make sure their investments happen in an efficient manner and help provide the infrastructure," Oddo added.

Elaine Aoravwski, who works at the Santander Bank on Page Avenue, said the improvements will making her commute home easier.

"The turning arrows really helps," she said. "It's very congested sometimes. You can wait three lights."

Ignizio said the project couldn't have come at a better time.

"There's a lot going on in this community and the infrastructure is going to keep pace," he said. "Roads are creating a bottleneck on our intersections."

Project highlights include:

The intersection of Page Avenue and Amboy Road, where new dedicated left turn lanes and arrows will be added to both directions of Amboy Road. Page Avenue will get right turn lanes and arrows on both sides and the roadway will be widened, Oddo said.

►Richmond Valley Road will be widened from Page Avenue to Arthur Kill Road to add extra lanes and potential curbside parking. Both projects will get sidewalk improvements, pedestrian ramps and crosswalks.

Construction on the roadway improvements is expected to start in fall 2016 or spring 2017 and will take nearly three years to complete, officials said.
