ASTORIA — The eclectic chef behind the popular Manhattan eateries Toloache and Yerba Buena will open his first venture in Queens this month, a Mexican eatery where diners can snack on shrimp with watermelon barbecue sauce and sip a cocktail served straight out of a pineapple.

Chef Julian Medina and partner Louis Skibar will open Tacuba on Sept. 15 at 35-01 36th St. in Astoria, the space formerly occupied by 5 Napkin Burger.

Medina, who appeared on "Good Morning America" and has had recipes featured in the New York Times, also served as executive chef at the popular SushiSamba chain.

He has devised a number of eclectic menu options at Zocalo on the Upper East Side, including Mexican Hannukah meal and an avocado-themed dinner, according to his bio.

The eatery is named after a section of Mexico City and will focus on "contemporary" Mexican food, according to a press release.

Among the menu items are Peruvian-style ceviche, poached shrimp served in a watermelon barbeque sauce, or a seafood platter of shrimp, octopus, clams and tilapia that comes with garlic sauce and cilantro rice.

The fare is also expected to include tacos, empanadas and guacamole that's made right at your table.

The drinks menu was crafted by mixologist Artemio Vasquez, an alum of East Village cocktail spot PDT, and will include margaritas as well as drinks served in fresh fruit.

The "Pina," for example, features mezcal, pineapple, agave and lime juices with jalapeño and cilantro, served up in a whole pineapple for $12 for a single serving, or $20 for two people.

Other cocktails come served in a watermelon and a coconut, according to the release.

Tacuba will open Sept. 15, with hours from 11 to midnight Sundays to Thursdays, and 11 to 4 a.m. Fridays and Saturdays, when there will also be a DJ.
