CARROLL GARDENS — A man stole a barstool from a Smith Street watering hole on Friday night, then used it to attack passersby along the busy nightlife and restaurant corridor, police said.
Richard Mercado, 26, swiped the barstool from The JakeWalk, 282 Smith St., near Sackett Street, on Aug. 15 about 11:20 p.m. and then used it during a 40-minute rampage, according to a criminal complaint.
Four of the barstool attacks occurred on the Smith Street sidewalk between Sackett and Carroll streets and two occurred inside Ting Hua, a Chinese food restaurant at 351 Smith St.
The victims, all men ages 26 to 44 years old, were hit on the head, legs and arms and left with cuts, bruises and swelling, according to the complaint. A 32-year-old man was taken to Lutheran Hospital, according to police.
Mercado is also suspected of breaking tables and chairs inside Ting Hua before smashing a chair through its front window, according to the criminal complaint.
Mercado was arrested soon after midnight inside the Chinese restaurant, police said. He was charged with several counts of assault, menacing, criminal possession of a weapon, harassment, criminal mischief, petit larceny and criminal possession of stolen property.
Bail was set at $5,000 and he's due back in court on Thursday, according to the Brooklyn District Attorney’s office. A temporary full order of protection has been issued against Mercado.
“We’re conducting an early investigation,” said Scott Krischke, Mercado’s attorney, who declined to comment on Mercado’s mental state.
Management at The JakeWalk and Ting Hua were not available to comment.
Other notable crimes in the 76th Precinct, according to police, include:
► A $400 iPad, a $200 Samsung Galaxy S3, a bag worth $50 and miscellaneous cards were stolen from a Cobble Hill residence on Tompkins Place between 11 p.m. to 9 a.m. on Aug. 16 and 17. The thief entered the building through the front door and there were no signs of forced entry, according to police.
