BUSHWICK — Bushwick commuters might find themselves in a surprise art gallery Friday evening.
The brothers behind Apostrophe, whose underground party space and art gallery was closed down last year, are planning to display art at the Koscuiszko J train stop for an hour on Friday in a "flash mob" fashion, Ki Smith said.
All the pieces, from eight different artists, will be on four-by-four boards and be black and white, Smith said. The artists plan to pop up at the train stop at 6 p.m. sharp and hang pieces by attaching s-hooks to the corrugated metal on the stop's walls.
For Smith, it's a way to bring art to people during their daily routines, he said.
"In subways, you have an interesting situation where you have so many people together but they're also alone," he said.
"If you make something on the platform that makes two people look at the same thing, all of a sudden those two people have something to talk about."
Plus, many people riding the train might not usually attend an art opening. Bringing the art to them hopefully gets people more excited about it, Smith said.
As Apostrophe tries to raise money to start a new space, the brothers still want to bring art to the neighborhood.
"New York is constantly in transit," Smith said. "It's kind of nice having these pop-up things, where all of a sudden, on my way home, I accidentally saw an art opening. That's great."
After Friday's event, the art will reappear at the Brooklyn Renaissance Festival at 2501 Pitkin Ave., from 12 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Saturday.
