RED HOOK — Ahoy, Red Hook! It’s time to don your DIY hats.

Designers and artists looking for maritime-themed décor are in luck, as three tractor-trailers filled with discounted marine equipment will go up for sale at Pier 11 in Red Hook later this week.

From shackles to bollards, nonprofit maritime organization PortSide NewYork will be selling industrial-scale hardware at a fundraising sale for the group on Sunday, July 27, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

“This is a gold mine for people who repurpose,” said Carolina Salguero, the organization’s founder and director. Funds raised will benefit the nonprofit and its Hurricane Sandy recovery efforts.

All of the items — which were donated by a local shipping supplies firm that shut down — are in working condition and can still be used in the marine industry, Salguero said.

While the parts will be discounted, Salguero isn’t putting a price on them yet. She’s willing to negotiate with potential buyers interested in the stock and in supporting the organization.

But the expense of some marine-themed furniture makes the sale an opportunity for homeowners and restaurateurs looking to recreate a seafarer’s motif, with items like 4-foot-tall turnbuckles, pulleys and cargo slings on sale, she said.

Single souvenirs like the Crosby Hook — which has become the informal symbol of Red Hook — will also be available in large numbers.

“A lot of local people are interested in hooks,” she said.

PortSide NewYork’s “Heavy Metal” fundraising sale will be held on July 27 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Pier 11 loading dock in Red Hook.
