FORT WADSWORTH — An armed carjacker drove through the toll plaza at the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge and was shot at by MTA Bridge and Tunnels police officers early Monday morning, police and the MTA said.

Tyree Brown, 25, approached a 29-year-old man behind 55 Holland Ave. in Mariners Harbor, pulled a gun and demanded money on Sunday around 6:10 a.m., police said. Brown told the victim to lay on the ground and then fled in his 2006 black Hummer, police said.

Hours later, two officers stopped the Hummer as it approached the Staten Island-bound toll plaza of the Verrazano Bridge at roughly 1:15 a.m. Monday morning, according to the MTA.

They heard a loud bang from inside the vehicle and then someone threw a woman out of the Hummer, the Staten Island Advance reported. The officers, thinking a gun had been fired, shot four times in return, the paper said.

Brown then ditched the Hummer near Targee Street and fled on foot, the Advance reported.

Police described Brown as 5-foot-8-inches tall, 150 pounds, with black hair and brown eyes and "Dorothea" tattooed on his neck. He was last seen wearing a red hooded jacket and tan pants.

Anyone with information with regards to the whereabouts of this individual is asked to call the NYPD's Crime Stoppers Hotline at 800-577-TIPS.
