ASTORIA — Summer started off with a splash on Friday as the city's free outdoor swimming pools reopened for the season, including the popular Olympic-sized pool at Astoria Park.
Measuring 330 feet in length, the Astoria Park Pool is the city's largest and was built in 1936 under then-Parks Commissioner Robert Moses, who used it as a model for ten other public swimming pools that were built that summer, according to the Parks Department website.
The pool's popular lap swim program, which designates early morning and evening hours for adult swimmers, is scheduled to begin July 7. Participants can register for it online here.
The city's outdoor public pools will be open from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., with a break for pool-cleaning at 3 p.m., through Sept. 1. For more information, visit the Parks Department's website.
