ST. GEORGE — The Staten Island Yankees are looking to break a record at the team's home opener this Friday — but not for most home runs.

In a bid to break the Guinness Book World Record for most fake mustaches worn at the same place at the same time, the stadium will dole out a fake mustache to every fan who turns up for the sold-out Staten Island Yankees opening game at the 7,171-seat Richmond County Bank Ballpark against the Brooklyn Cyclones on Friday.

The idea for the challenge came with the aid of comedian Jen Remauro and the American Mustache Institute, who helped organize the event.

"Ever since I was a little girl, I loved mustaches. My grandfather had one and so did my grandmother,"  Remauro joked.

To try and claim the world record, attendees of the game will be given a free fake mustache at the gate and be asked to put them on during the third inning.

The previous record of 2,268 fake mustaches was set on July 2013 in Iowa, Remauro said.

Steve Violetta, Staten Island Yankees CEO, said in a statement, "As someone who has proudly worn many styles of mustaches over the years, starting with a really bad one at about 14 years old, I join all Staten Island Yankee fans in saluting all ‘staches, real and those fake ones designed to break records."
