DOWNTOWN BROOKLYN — The Krishnas might be headed to Queens with $60 million in their pockets.
The US headquarters for The International Society for Krishna Consciousness recently hit the market and the religious group is on the hunt for a new space in Queens, according to the real estate agent.
David Schechtman, director of Eastern Consolidated, which is brokering the deal, is hoping to fetch $60 million for the 187,000-square-feet property at 305 Schermerhorn St. in Downtown Brooklyn.
"We are blown away by the level of interest in this building," he said. "$60 million is the target and we’re gonna hit it."
Schechtman could not say which Queens neighborhoods the Krishnas are eyeing but did say they are amenable to building out a space from the ground up.
The Krishnas have occupied their current temple for 31 years and the majority of members live in Queens, according to The Real Deal, which first reported the listing.
The Hare Krishna movement was founded in New York in 1966 with the first headquarters located on Second Avenue in Manhattan before they outgrew the space and moved to Brooklyn.
It is unclear how many members the group currently has.
A restaurant in the basement floor of the temple serves lunch to the public daily from 12 to 3 p.m. daily for $10. Temple hours begin at 4:30 a.m. and run for intervals until 9 p.m.
Ram Bhadra, the president of the Brooklyn temple, declined to comment on the Hare Krishna group or the building's impending sale saying he "signed a confidentiality agreement."
