ELMHURST — A fire in the basement of a home in Elmhurst has left one man in critical condition, and officials have ordered the home be vacated.

The blaze in the basement of 41-59 73rd St., off Woodside Avenue, started Sunday just before 9:15 p.m., according to the FDNY, and was under control about an hour later.

One man, who hasn't been identified, was taken to New York Hospital in Manhattan, where he is listed in critical condition, according to the FDNY.

On Monday morning, a notice from the Department of Buildings was posted on the front door of the home ordering the building partly vacated.

The DOB found that "conditions in this premises are imminently perilous to life," according to the posting.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
