WASHINGTON HEIGHTS — The Morris-Jumel Mansion is inviting uptowners to step back in time this weekend to celebrate George Washington's birthday.
Children can dress up in Revolutionary War-era garb, learn to write with a quill and participate in a history-themed scavenger hunt at the free, daylong celebration Saturday that will include 90-minute guided tours for adults and kids.
The events honoring the Founding Father who lived at the Palladian-style estate during the 1776 Battle of Harlem Heights are an annual favorite at the mansion, director Carol Ward said Monday.
"We have all of the clothes set out on the second floor, and families can take pictures," she said. "For girls there are dresses and bonnets, and for boys it's breeches and vests and really fun shoes for everyone."
The scavenger hunt will send families around the 8,500-square-foot house searching for answers to questions about the mansion, Ward said. Those who finish the hunt will receive educational items from the museum gift shop.
New to the celebration this year is a reading by Christine Wade, author of the pre-Revolution-era mystery "Seven Locks."
"It's about a woman whose husband goes missing and she has to get involved with a spy situation," Ward said.
The celebration is scheduled for 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 65 Jumel Terrace, which is near Edgecombe Avenue and West 160th Street. No RSVP is required.
