SOUTH STREET SEAPORT — A Seaport watering hole that was one of the first to reopen after Hurricane Sandy will serve its last drink on Sunday.
Meade’s, at 22 Peck Slip, is closing its doors permanently at midnight on Feb. 23, the bar’s owner, Lee Holin, told DNAinfo New York.
“We just couldn’t make it work,” said Holin, 38, who opened Meade's in 2006. “Everything is changing in the Seaport, in the city, and we are a casualty of that change.”
He declined to elaborate on the reasons for the closure.
Holin posted the news about Meade's to the bar’s Facebook page Monday, writing, “Manhattan’s progress has reached the Seaport." Regulars quickly expressed their shock and sadness over the loss of the pub.
“OMG, I am in tears, at my desk,” wrote Bridget Schuy. “WTF ?!?!”
"I am so saddened by this news," posted Crystal Barnhart. "Let's make this last weekend memorable!"
Despite being overwhelmed with more than 5 feet of floodwater during Sandy, the bar managed to reopen its doors — though without full power or a working kitchen — within 10 days of the storm, bringing in outdoor grills and using mini fridges for the food.
Holin's father, Jeremy Holin, owns another Seaport bar: Jeremy's Ale House at 228 Front St. Jeremy's has been part of the neighborhood, at several different locations, since the 1970s.
