NEW YORK CITY — Look inside a Fashion Week model's bag and you won't always find gum, lip gloss or cigarettes — you could find a novel, or in the case of Giedre Dukauskaite, 25, a comic book.
"Since I was a kid, I was reading them and I always enjoyed them," said the Lithuanian beauty who was spotted reading a Batman comic between runway shows at New York Fashion Week. "I didn’t see why I had to grow up."
From comic books to memoirs to genre fiction, models at New York Fashion Week are just as into their reading as they are their jobs.
"We're on planes a lot. We're waiting around a lot," said model Juliana Schurig, 19. "It's better to read a book then just fiddle with my phone all day."
Schurig, who lives in the West Village and is signed to DNA Models, said her new year's resolution was to read more while she's in transit and in between runway shows.
Here are a few book suggestions from models at New York Fashion Week
Model Daniel Pimentel, 30, who was walking in the Nautica runway show Friday, said he loves comedian Jim Gaffigan for his clean humor and honest writing.
"He is basically writing about his life of having five kids in a two-bedroom apartment," said Pimentel, of the New York-based comedian. "He also shares about being inspired by his wife and his love for her."
"The Caves of Steel" by Isaac Asimov
The book of the moment for model Mick Szal is "The Caves of Steel," a science-fiction tale about colonizing other galaxies and a robot detective.
"I always get people to recommend books so I get to experience all the genres," said Szal, a Lower East Side resident.
"The Inventor's Notebook" by Fred E. Grissom
Danny Schwarz, 27, who walked in the Nautica runway show at Fashion Week, is not just a model, he is something of an inventor too.
Schwarz just patented two travel accessory products that he plans to turn into a business. He said "The Inventor's Notebook" is schooling him on how to do it.
"It is a brilliant insight into the development of a product and bringing it to market," said Schwarz, who lives in Williamsburg.
"The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat" by Oliver Sacks
"It's an easy read, but you get something from it," said model Tess Hellfeuer, 20 who lives in Berlin.
The bestselling book "recounts the case histories of patients lost in the bizarre, apparently inescapable world of neurological disorders," according to the publisher's notes.
"The Fault in Our Stars" by John Green
The book in model Juliana Schurig's bag, "The Fault in Our Stars," tells the story of two people who fell for each other during a cancer support group.
"It's a love story. It's cute," Schurig said.
"Batman Vol 2: City of Owls"
Dukauskaite said "The Avengers" by Marvel comics is another favorite.
