QUEENS — A group of artists from Kew Gardens is partaking in a global art project that is looking to spread the message of peace.
Participants in the Global Art Project For Peace will create works of art in a variety of forms, expressing their vision for global peace, the organizers said.
Their projects will be displayed at Austin’s Ale House from April 2-22. They will also exchange their works with artists from another country from April 23-30, “resulting in thousands or people sending messages of peace and goodwill around the world at one time,” the organizers said.
Those works will also be displayed in Austin's Ale House and there will be another group show in the fall to highlight the art received.
The project was established in 1993, and so far about 115,000 artists from diverse cultural backgrounds — from China to Burundi to Morocco — have participated. But it’s the first time that a group of artists from Kew Gardens will join the project.
“I decided to bring it to Kew Gardens, because we are so multicultural here. I felt like it was a terrific match,” said Carol Lacks, a local activist who is also the project regional coordinator.
“We have so many artists and I want to give them the opportunity to show their work,” said Lacks who is working on her own photo collage for the project.
So far 11 local artists have signed up for the project and Lacks said she hopes 30 other will join.
Those interested in participating can register at www.globalartproject.org. There is a $15 fee for those who participate and the deadline is Feb. 28. Those interested should also contact Carol Lacks at kewgardensarts@gmail.com.
