INWOOD — Construction crews have been deployed to the West 215th Step-Street as the long-awaited repair work has begun.

Crews with jackhammers began working Monday as the City Department of Design and Construction repairs the steps, which connect Broadway with Park Terrace East at West 215th Street.

Residents have long complained of the cracked steps, which pool water during rain and form ice in the winter. The DDC awarded a $2.5 million contract to Queens-based Acme Skillman Concrete Co. for the repairs in June 2013.

The repairs are estimated to take 17 months and will involve a top-to-bottom reconstruction of the stairs, complete with new bike channels, lighting and benches and drainage systems. The DDC has previously promised to keep the steps available for public use at all times during the project.
