ST. GEORGE — Councilwoman Debi Rose joined several organizations to clean up and weed messy tree beds along Richmond Terrace on Monday afternoon, part of the Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service.

More than a dozen volunteers from the city's Park Department, H.E.A.L.T.H for Youths, Trees NY and Partnership for Parks raked and cleaned trash, leaves and weeds from the several tree beads on Richmond Terrace near Hamilton Avenue.

"This is really exciting that we've been able to put together organizations that are working collaboratively to improve our street scape," Rose said. "I'm so excited because we're going to transform the North Shore one tree bed at a time."

Residents who walked by commended the volunteers for the work, saying that the beds serve as a constant dumping spot for garbage.

Rose said that the cleaning the spot — which is in front of where the New York Wheel will eventually stand — will help improve the community as a whole.

"When the community aesthetically is appealing then the community feels invested and then they feel better about the community," Rose said.

Volunteers from the groups will continue to maintain the beds throughout the year, with plans to try and eventually clean and replace tree beds in Mariners Harbor destroyed by Hurricane Sandy, Rose said.
