PARKCHESTER – A 32-year-old woman was fatally run over while crossing East Tremont Avenue in the Bronx Saturday evening, police said.

Nydja Herring was steps from her home when she was struck by a white Volkswagen at the intersection of East Tremont Avenue and Van Nest Avenue about 5:20 p.m., police said. According to the NYPD, the driver of the Volkswagon, 28-year-old Augustus Jenkins of Montgomery, N.Y., was driving drunk.

Herring was found unconscious and was brought to Einstein Hospital, where she was pronounced dead upon arrival, police said.

Jenkins was not injured and was taken into custody, police said. According to police, he had three passengers in the car, an adult woman and two boys, ages 4 and 10, who were also not injured.

Jenkins was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated and driving without a valid license.
