THE BRONX — Illegal fireworks set off in a Pelham Bay Park baseball field shattered windows of nearby homes and blasted loud enough to echo around the neighborhood Monday night, officials said.

Someone lit the fireworks without permission in a ball field near Middletown Road and Ampere Avenue about 11 p.m. and blew out the windows of at least three nearby homes, according to NYPD and FDNY officials.

The fire department received calls from throughout the neighborhood around the park reporting that they'd heard a loud explosion, officials said.

The fireworks explosion the night before New Year's Eve was unsanctioned, the FDNY said. The city's official New Year's Eve fireworks displays will take place in Central Park at 10 p.m. and Grand Army Plaza at 11 p.m.

No arrests had been made in the illegal fireworks explosion as of Tuesday morning and police said they were still investigating the incident.

No one appeared to have been injured in the explosion, officials said.
