MANHATTAN — The NYPD is looking for the one that got away.

William Monge-Betancourt, 23, was pulled over for speeding in Washington Heights Friday night but when police saw drugs in the car they took out their handcuffs, police said. Soon after he was in custody, Monge-Betancourt wrestled free and ran into oncoming traffic on the Cross Bronx Expressway, police said.

He was still at large Sunday morning.

The chain of events began about 10 p.m. when officers spotted a 2011 Honda Accord driving at a high rate of speed near 126th Street and Lexington Avenue. They followed the speeding sedan four miles and stopped it on the Cross Bronx Expressway near 181st Street, police said.

During the routine stop, officers saw that the driver and his unidentified passenger had various drugs on them. Officers were able to arrest the passenger and at one point had Monge-Betancourt in custody but freedom loving suspect broke free, injuring an officer's hand in the process, according to the NYPD.

He was last seen running toward headlights of oncoming traffic.

Police described Monge-Betancourt as Hispanic, about 5-foot-8, 175 pounds with short black hair and brown eyes.

Anyone who knows where he may be is encouraged to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-577-8477, All call are confidential.
