NEW YORK CITY — A week before Mayor Michael Bloomberg leaves office, a new job awaits: changing diapers for his newborn grandson.

Bloomberg welcomed his first grandchild on Christmas Eve, when his younger daughter, Georgina Bloomberg, 30, gave birth to Jasper Michael Brown Quintana, weighing 7-pounds, 7-ounces. The baby was delivered at 4:34 p.m. Tuesday at an undisclosed New York City hospital.

Bloomberg boasted about baby Jasper while visiting police officers and firefighters working in Queens on Christmas morning.

"Whether [Jasper is] going to join the police department I have absolutely no idea," he said at the 108th Precinct in Long Island City, where he was joined by Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly. "He did not tell me anything yesterday, as you might imagine."

Baby Jasper's father is Georgina Bloomberg's boyfriend, Argentine equestrian Ramiro Quintana, 36. Mayor Bloomberg described the new dad as very attentive.

"He was texting me all day long — he was doing it in Spanish, actually, which is good for my practice," he said.

"My daughter wanted a family. And she's ecstatic," Bloomberg added, noting that his daughter, also a noted equestrian, was out with him until 1 a.m. early Sunday morning for his appearance on "Saturday Night Live."

At nearby Engine 258/Ladder 115, firefighter Leo Lopez presented Bloomberg with a handmade "#1 Grandpa" mug, saying it was a last-minute gift from the guys at the firehouse.

"We found out this morning, so we made the mug," Lopez said.

Bloomberg and Fire Commissioner Sal Cassano had a private breakfast with firefighters at the 47th Avenue firehouse.

The beaming grandpa said he planned on spending Christmas visiting his daughter and grandson in the hospital after his trip to Queens.
