CROWN HEIGHTS — A big taste of Texas is coming to a tiny corner of Brooklyn.
Kosher pitmaster Ari White of the Bronx-based Hakadosh BBQ is bringing more than 2,000 pounds of his Texas-style brisket, chicken and ribs to Crown Heights this weekend, for a two-day barbecue extravaganza.
White, an El Paso native who is now based in Riverdale, smokes and serves kosher meat throughout the tri-state area, but this will be his first major event in Brooklyn — and he's spending much of this week preparing.
"We’re literally coming to Brooklyn with a ton of BBQ," White said Tuesday, adding that he had just spent hours out in the snow with his behemoth smoker. "If I were to open up these chambers right now, I’m looking at beef short ribs in one, lamb shanks into the next, and lamb bacon."
Hakadosh BBQ will set up a heated tent in the backyard of Hasidic synagogue Chevra Ahavas Yisroel, 306 Albany Ave., from noon to 9 p.m. on Sunday and Monday, offering a menu including $10 pulled chicken sandwiches, $15 lamb shanks and $55 long bone beef rib platters.
"My friends and I are really big fans," said Chanie Kaminker, the synagogue's events chairwoman. "We like them because we think their vibe is very similar to our own. It’s the rustic, hand-crafted, a-little-bit-hippy kind of movement."
Like the synagogue, Hakadosh BBQ mixes a bit of playfulness with tradition: The name itself is a pun on "Hakadosh Baruchu," a name for God in Hebrew.
The pop-up barbecue spot has competed in national kosher cook-offs and fed thousands at New York City street fairs, but White said he's looking forward to his first major foray into Brooklyn, where kosher foodies are slowly but surely making their presence felt.
"I'm a third-generation smoker," White said, "so it's been fun to bring something I grew up with to these Yankees."
Hakadosh BBQ will offer its kosher barbecue at 306 Albany Ave., between Eastern Parkway and Lincoln Place, from noon to 9 p.m. Dec. 22 and 23.
