DOWNTOWN BROOKLYN — Future Plaza's wall will stay green this winter.
The 50-foot wall at the intersection of Flatbush Avenue and Gold Street in Downtown Brooklyn, which local students designed and built as a "live green wall" made of milk cartons and plants during the summer, will stay green through the winter thanks to muralist Steve Powers.
Powers recently covered the wall in a bright green paint background with red lettering that spells "Green." He incorporated milk cartons, leaves, and a backwards hat into his design, to honor the students' work.
The mural, which was created as part of a partnership with design firm Fantastica, will be covered up with plants once again when the weather heats up.
“We wanted to perpetuate the ‘green’ character of the plaza over the winter months,” Fantastica's Manuel Mansylla told the Downtown Brooklyn Partnership. “So we needed an art piece that would not only give people an idea of what the plaza is all about, but also something to look forward to — and really generate expectation of what’s to come in the spring.”
Powers is a Brooklyn-based graffiti artist and sign maker. He has created several well-known works throughout the Downtown Brooklyn area including his "Love Letter to Brooklyn" mural on the parking garage at Macy's on Fulton Street — which includes the phrase "Turn to Me" painted in bold black letters.
His colorful subway line mural, painted above Hero Shop on Red Hook Lane, features multicolored subway routes painted in huge swaths across the facade of a building.
