WILLIAMSBURG — A giant sculpture for a popular citywide arts festival remained in East River State Park over the weekend, despite the state ordering last week that the 50-foot-long piece be removed.

The social justice-focused artwork called "Queen Mother of Reality" by Polish artist Pawel Althamer still lacks the proper authorization to be in the park, officials from the state Parks Department said Monday after ordering it be taken out Thursday.

"It's coming down this week," Randy Simons, a spokesman for the state Parks Department said Monday, after insisting the sculpture be removed four days earlier.

The piece, for the Performa Biennial arts festival, was scheduled to be taken down last Thursday, Performa officials said of the temporary sculpture.

They did not immediately respond to requests for comment Monday, nor did representatives from Biba Restaurant, the cafe renting space at the park that first gave Performa approval to install the sculpture there.
