MANHATTAN — A woman was raped by a man she met and accompanied into Central Park early Sunday morning, police said.

The woman, believed to be in her late 20s, had been walking on East 88th Street near Fifth Avenue about 3:30 a.m. when a man who said his name was "Omar" started chatting with her, the NYPD said.

The two walked arm in arm into the park near 100th Street, according to surveillance video released by police.

They walked along a bike path to a bench where they sat and talked, police said. Then, the suspect turned violent and dragged her into a grassy area of the park and raped her, the NYPD said.

The woman managed to escape and ran to nearby Mount Sinai Hospital, a police spokesman said.

The suspect, who is believed to be in his early 30s and about 5 foot 7, was last seen wearing a red hat, black leather jacket and blue jeans, the NYPD said.

Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at (800) 577-TIPS (8477).
