MANHATTAN — An Upper East Side secondary school was locked down Tuesday afternoon after a student took a BB gun inside, the Department of Education said.

The 17-year-old boy, whose identity was not immediately released, was taken to the 19th Precinct stationhouse after he brought a BB gun and additional ball bearings to the school near 96th Street and First Avenue, a DOE spokeswoman said.

The initial report was for a handgun in a school bathroom, the spokeswoman said, but that later proved untrue.

"We have a lockdown at the Life Sciences Secondary School," she said about 1 p.m. It was lifted about 15 minutes later.

The school enrolls about 800 students in grades 6 through 12, according to its website.

An NYPD spokesman said they were investigating the incident.
