BEDFORD-STUYVESANT — This is one bar that didn't have a problem getting its liquor license.

A new restaurant and bar owned by the district manager of Brooklyn's Community Board 3 and two longtime friends is serving up gourmet burgers and Brooklyn beer in Bed-Stuy.

Brooklyn Burger and Brew Co., at 202 Ralph Ave., is owned by board District Manager Henry Butler, Shaun Perkins and Elliott Bey, and is the first of its kind in eastern Bed-Stuy, according to the owners.

The district manager said he decided to join the business venture as an extension of his work with the community board.

"It was an opportunity to bring a service to the community that was needed," Butler said. "It was an opportunity to bring employment to the community."

The restaurant serves Angus beef, Tilapia, turkey, chicken and veggie burgers, alongside smaller menu items like sliders, from chef Yahya Sigidi. On tap, Brooklyn Burger and Brew offers six types of beer from the Brooklyn Brewery, including Brooklyn Pilsner, Oktoberfest, IPA, Pumpkin Ale, Lager and Sorachi Ace.

While Bed-Stuy is still working through the growing pains of gentrification, many of the new restaurants were opening on the western end of the neighborhood, on blocks like Bedford Avenue, which cater to "a younger professional crowd," Butler said.

The three men said they chose their location in order to provide a place for people to go without traveling too far.

"On this side you have a lot of young professionals, a lot of old-timers, a lot of people who have money," Butler said. "Sometimes you just want to stay in your own community and have a drink."
