TIMES SQUARE — Paul McCartney played a surprise concert in Times Square Thursday afternoon.

"Wow! Really excited to be playing New York Times Square at 1pm this afternoon!" the former Beatle said on Twitter at about noon. About 30 minutes later, he added, "Come on down to Times Square... It's all going to be happening there!"

McCartney took the stage at West 46th Street and Broadway about 1:15 p.m. Those unable to make it there in time could tune-in via the Times Square "Earthcam," which included an audio feed. The brief concert, which was over just after 1:30 p.m., was part of McCartney's appearances across in New York City to promote his latest album, "New," which is set to be released Monday.

His appearance delighted fans who couldn't believe their luck.

"So Sir Paul is playing in Times Square right now ...I am really watching Paul McCartney right now..." wrote Twitter user mollykluba.
