CARROLL PARK — A spooky performance is on the way to Carroll Park this Halloween.
Actors from Smith Street Stage will enliven tales from writers Edgar Allan Poe and W.W. Jacobs in "Edgar & Jacobs," which will be performed for free inside the brick Robert Acito Park House on Halloween night.
The piece is a "radio play," which means the actors don't wear costumes or use props, and they make all the sound effects themselves as they read their lines.
While "Edgar & Jacobs" will have scary moments, artistic director Beth Ann Hopkins said that since it's a radio play that focuses on words rather than visuals, "you don't have to worry about the blood."
Three actors will portray all the roles in the stories, which include "The Raven,” “The Tell-Tale Heart” and “The Monkey’s Paw.”
“It takes a special kind of actor to be able to do something like that,” said Hopkins, who will perform alongside Patrick Harvey and Pete McElligott. “There’s a little bit of magic in it.”
Smith Street Stage previously put on "A Christmas Carol" in the park house last winter, a piece they hope to revive this winter.
Also this month, the theater group is hosting a tribute concert for Stevie Wonder at The Living Room at 154 Ludlow St., as a fundraiser for the group's annual “Shakespeare in Carroll Park” production, Hopkins said. The Oct. 20 concert will feature nearly 20 musicians, including New York-based saxophonist Andy Gutauskas, pianist Elliot Roth and 13th Alibi.
"Edgar & Jacobs" will be performed in Carroll Park's Robert Acito Park House at 7 p.m. Oct. 31. The Stevie Wonder tribute concert will be held at The Living Room at 6 p.m. on Oct. 20. For tickets to the event, visit this website.
