UPPER WEST SIDE — A new CrossFit gym is opening on Columbus Avenue this October, and memberships are already going fast.

About 350 people have signed up for the $200-per-month CrossFit NYC on Columbus Avenue at West 67th Street, even though it hasn't even opened yet, said Liz Friedland, a spokeswoman for the gym. The gym plans to offer 800 to 1,000 memberships in all for the new 12,000-square-foot exercise space.

Though CrossFit, a strength and conditioning program led by trainers, has made major inroads in New York City, the West Side has been largely devoid of any gyms, or "boxes," as they're called.

The new Columbus Avenue location will offer more than 500 classes a week, including in-depth weekend seminars.

Friedland said that while other CrossFit chains have begun spreading across Lower Manhattan and Brooklyn, CrossFit NYC is the largest, with more than 1,500 members, and was the first to open in the city in 2004.

"They’re kind of like the Yankees, or CBGB or Nathan’s hot dogs," Friedland said. "They’re the original. They know how to do it. They’ve been here for a while."

Upcoming expansions for CrossFit NYC include two new floors at its West 28th Street location and a new Upper East Side gym opening in 2014, Friedland added.
