PROSPECT HEIGHTS — It's a far cry from funnel cake.
The second annual Crown Heights/Prospect Heights Food Allies Health and Harvest Fair is coming to Prospect Heights later this month, bringing organic produce, apiaries and alternative birth coaches to the masses on Underhill Avenue.
"Everybody goes to street fairs, but they’re so unhealthy," said Fran Miller of the Crown Heights/Prospect Heights Food Allies, which will host the Sept. 21 event. "Instead of fried dough, we’re going to have squash soup. Instead of trinkets, we’re ... giving away vegetables and smoothie samples."
In addition to food, the fair will include yoga and message demonstrations, a diabetes educator and representatives from several local community gardens, as well as a free-throw contest, chess games and a pingpong tournament. The newly-opened Brooklyn Brainery will host an origami workshop.
"In Crown Heights its not easy to find healthy, less-processed food," Miller explained. "We decided last year that our first event would be this fair."
The emphasis, Miller said, is on local businesses that promote healthy living.
"We wanted to give kids the idea that a carrot doesn’t grow in the store but in the ground," Miller said. "We wanted to use it as a platform to show people that healthy food and healthy living is fun and delicious and it exists right here in our neighborhood."
