MANHATTAN — The young British tourist who lost her left leg in cab accident across the street from Rockefeller Center last month has been upgraded to good condition, her family said Wednesday.

Sian Green, 23, was moved out of the Intensive Care Unit at Bellevue Hospital where she had been recovering since a taxi jumped the curb at the corner of Sixth Avenue and 49th Street on Aug. 20 and hit her, severing her limb.

A group of good Samaritans, including a plumber and Dr. Mehmet Oz, came to her rescue, tying tourniquets to stop the bleeding and packing her severed limb on ice, but doctors at Bellevue Hospital were unable to reattach her leg.

"Her physicians at Bellevue Hospital have upgraded her condition from 'fair' to 'good' and moved her out of the ICU unit, marking a milestone in her recovery process," the family's lawyer Daniel G.P. Marchese said in a statement Wednesday. "Sian has begun rehabilitation and will remain at Bellevue for the duration of her therapy."

The driver, Mohammed F. Himon, was given a summons after the crash for not being authorized to drive that cab.

His Taxi and Limousine Commission license was also suspended for 30 days after the agency found he had seven points on his driving record and four TLC infractions.

Himon apologized for the accident, but he blamed the crash on a bike rider who had slammed his hand on the hood of the cab, which he claimed caused him to lose control of his vehicle.

Green's parents and boyfriend traveled from England to be with her while she recovered at Bellevue.

"Despite the circumstances, she continues to remain in good spirits with the support of family, friends and the staff at Bellevue Hospital," Marchese said.
