MIDTOWN EAST — A giant flower sculpture made of fiberglass will be on display at Dag Hammarskjold Plaza beginning in October.

The glossy red poppy, called "Love," will be placed on the platform on the Second Avenue side of the plaza, according to a spokeswoman for the Parks Department, who presented the proposal to Community Board 6 on Tuesday evening.

Artist Ana Tzarev, who has a gallery in Midtown, was invited to show the sculpture at the plaza thanks to a joint initiative of the Parks Department and the Friends of Dag Hammarskjold Plaza, the spokeswoman said.

“Love symbolizes not only the overwhelming power and beauty of nature, but the intercultural language flowers possess of generosity and friendship through the dialogue of art,” according to the proposal by the Parks Department.

The 500-pound flower stands about 11 feet wide and 10 feet tall, and it took the artist two years to create.

The exhibit will run from October 2013 to April 2014.
