BATTERY PARK CITY — Four young palm trees are growing in Brookfield Place's Winter Garden, replacing the towering trees that were chopped down last week.

The new palms are much shorter than the towering 60-foot trees — which had to be removed because they were growing too tall for the glass-enclosed space, the Vesey Street complex's owner said.

By the end of this week, a total of 16 new trees, each about 35 feet tall, will replace the palms that were chopped down, according to representatives of Brookfield Office Properties. They will all be Washingtonia robusta trees, the same type as the previous trees, officials said.

The old trees — which were planted in 2002, when the 10-story Winter Garden reopened to the public following post-9/11 repairs — were turned into mulch and will be used in gardens at local hospitals "to honor their role in the Winter Garden that made it both a place to meet and a place to rest, " Brookfield said in a statement.

"The palms quickly came to symbolize new beginnings and change, and so much positivity."
